Patrick Thilmany, whose workshop is located in the beautiful Hudson Valley in upstate New York, has worked with tone, harmonics, and vibration of sound for 28 years, and has been involved in teaching music and performing professionally since the age of 13. He had a personal goal of creating a stringed instrument that had tone qualities which reflected themselves within the listener in such a manner as to be beneficial spiritually, psychologically, emotionally, and physically.

He followed the advances in music therapy in the West, and related this information to the wisdoms of the East.
In 1980 he was approached by an American-born music therapist who had received her training in Europe where music therapy was already established and applied in everyday practice more so than in North America.
She was utilizing an instrument of European design called the Lyre (Lie-er) developed specifically for therapeutic settings.
She asked Patrick if he could understand the nature of the tone created by her instrument and attempt to develop an American lyre from native woods, that would bear the spirit of the American soul in its nature. After 12 years of intensive research, design, prototype development, and field trials, an instrument was born which manifested the archetypal qualities Patrick had sought in such an instrument. Following blind tests conducted by the North American Lyre Association, Patrick’s work in the form of the Rose Lyre was introduced at the 1993 North American Lyre Conference and heartily endorsed as the third generation of true Lyres, and the first (and only) outside of Europe. Since then, the Rose Lyre has grown to a 30 string soprano range lyre. After this dramatic introduction in 1993, the Waldorf School Movement requested that Patrick design instruments appropriate to the pedagogical work of Waldorf Schools due to the prohibitive costs associated with the European instruments.
Described further within this site are the Hermes and Apollo Lyres, which were developed in the same manner as the Rose Lyre through the Waldorf movement. The Hermes was born in May 1994, and the Apollo became available to the world in the fall of 1997. These instruments have gone on to be utilized in Waldorf Schools and teacher training programs in the general public due to their soothing qualities and ease of use. The research continues, even as these new instruments are being circulated around the world, and we continue to search our minds (and yours) for ways we can further your work and/or life experience through the inner nature of music. At present, Rose Lyres are being played in homes and concerts from here to Japan, and Hermes and Apollo Lyres are being utilized not only in the home, but are also enthusiastically promoted in Waldorf educational systems.
In 1997, spurred by the desire to make healthful, nourishing aspects of music more readily available to more people, we broadened our horizons, and began producing a catalogue called "Nature's Song" . . . and now, with the advent of the new Millennium we are pleased to offer you this web site.

We at Nature's Song and the Rose Lyre Workshop, believe that music, as one of the arts, and the central of the seven liberal arts, acts as a bridge between our inner, spiritual nature, and our outer, physical nature. Music's role as a bridge can be exploited for negative purposes just as anything else, but we hope to offer an alternative to these darker forces in our environment through providing you with a service which fosters access to music in a nurturing, healing, and consciousness-raising manner. Our hope is that you will tap into this fragile, yet powerful resource, and that the experience of music will touch your soul and provide not only enjoyment, but also that it opens you to an experience of oneness with all that exists both tangible and intangible. This concept of music as a bridge between the spiritual and the physical is presented to us every day through Nature. Music is inherent in nature and we, as part of nature, have music within us whether we experience it as the "Word", "The Harmony of the Spheres", or the "Om" of the chakras. From this observation, it arose in our consciousness that our vehicle for communicating should be called "Nature's Song." We strive always to improve the quality and integrity of our services, and have a sincere desire to enrich you life.
